Castwell & Co.

Our Casting Commitment

We recognize that the process of casting a show can be difficult and the idea of selecting the “right fit” for a role from a pool of incredible talent has many factors, some of them subjective (this is an arts medium).

With this understanding as our foundation, Castwell & Co. pledges to our audacious auditionees that for every production we will:

  • cast the individual whom we believe is most suited for the role. Period.

  • adhere to any restrictions or guidelines outlined in our licensing contract concerning casting decisions.

  • include a dedicated Casting Team, ensuring that the cast list is not determined by a single individual.

  • strive to place individuals in positions where they can learn, grow, and achieve success most effectively.

  • commit to promptly sharing our cast list with our auditioning community.

  • dedicate ourselves to foster inclusivity and diversity in our casting choices. Our selections will not be influenced by factors such as race/ethnicity, disability, age, socioeconomic status, or gender/gender identity.

Transparency

Castwell & Co. upholds a steadfast commitment to transparency within our nonprofit organization. Our primary focus is on serving our community, and we approach the task of casting with a deep sense of responsibility to ensure fairness.

Here is our casting process:

  • Before actors ever step into the audition room, the director(s) must have a clear vision of each character and how they contribute to the overall narrative. This foresight guides the Casting Team in making decisions that align with the integrity of the story and the Director’s vision for the project. Casting isn’t just about finding talent, it’s about crafting memorable characters that resonate with audiences.

  • For each show, The Casting Team needs to consider:

    • A potential cast members natural ability to deliver comedy and drama, and how they balance the two.

    • A potential cast members emotional range, their physicality, and their voice.

    • A potential cast members chemistry with other actors, and how they interact and react to them.

    • A potential cast member's compatibility with your vision and style, and how they adapt and improvise.

    • A potential cast members professionalism, their attitude, and their enthusiasm.

    • A potential cast members availability, their flexibility, and their willingness to learn and collaborate.

  • The requirements for each role will be dissected, and skills will be assessed on a scale of 1 to 5 based on their significance to each specific role.

  • All auditions will be video recorded to enable the Casting Team to conduct thorough reviews and ensure no details are overlooked. Furthermore, these recordings can serve as valuable documentation in the event that the Board of Directors needs to address any casting-related concerns.

  • Auditions may vary in structure depending on the type of performance being cast. For instance, the preparation material required for actors auditioning for a musical may differ from that needed for a dramatic play. It is imperative for the Director and Casting team to effectively communicate the specific requirements to potential cast members in advance.
